The year 1989 holds a very significant year in my life I was 9 years old i used to live in South Delhi at that time , one day when I was coming back from my school St Xaviers i saw Rajesh Khanna the super star i got crazy after it , I left my school bag at home and went out but by then he had left . I was disappointed but my mother said dont be sad he will come back tomorrow , I did not understand that why will he come back again so i asked my mother "why will he come tomorrow ?" She said he is fighting elections from hear , as a 9 year old child i did not understand what elections are but i did not mind them since it was bringing one of my movie star to my area so i kind of liked it .
Next day i did not go to school i was waiting for Rajesh Khanna to come i waited waited and then he came there was another man who was with him , i wanted to go near him but some how the security just did not allow me later i came to know it was Rajeev Gandhi . I went home and told my mother that i could not meet Rajesh Khanna and there was another man who was with him and people were saying his name is Rajeev Gandhi . I asked my mother who is Rajeev Gandhi ? does he also works in Movies ? How come i have never seen his Movie ? my mother told me he is not the movie star but the Prime Minster of India . I was a little confused whats a prime minster and what is Rajesh Khanna doing with him so I asked my mother what was Rajesh Khanna doing with him ? she told me he is fighting elections , honestly i did not understand any thing only thing i understood was that if more and more people voted for Rajesh Khanna i would get to see him more often so I was very happy and exited .
Those were the good old days and my only source of information was DD News so i used watch it every day that was my first election I followed every bit of it . In those days counting used to be manual so election results use to come till late on DD some were around 2 the news came Rajesh Khanna has won i was happy and i went off to sleep when i got up in the morning i came to know the there was recounting and Shri L.K.Adavni of BJP won and Rajesh Khanna lost i was very disappointed , I even fought with my mother that why she did not go to vote if she would have voted he would have got one more vote , i did not realize but i started developing intrest in politics. After that election I became a Rajeev Gandhi Fan only because he supported Rajesh Khanna , as time passed and i grew older i started getting more regular with my newspaper and DD News .
21st may 1991 Rajeev was assainated i cried that day there was a void and seance of disappointment that who will bring rajesh khanna now , around 22nd or 23rd may Congress working Committee made Sonia Gandhi the President of the Congress Party , she had politely declined then , but personally i would always be thankful to Congress working Committee to take that decision since it was a eye opener for me , for the first time i realized i was supporting a bunch of supporters and not leaders , that was the first time in my life i started dis liking the congress party .
By 1996 my interest in politics had multiplied many folds , but i was not able get a alternative then one day i saw a TV Debate in lok Shabha it was the first time I saw Atal Jee , he had just become prime minster and was speaking on confidence motion in Lok Shabha. His speech deeply touched me and i did not like that people did not support him , he subsequently resigned and for 2 yrs United Front Govt came .
By the year 1998 General Elections were announced and guess what i was major now i had the right to vote , i voted for BJP . Atal Jee again became the prime minster and remained in office till 2004 , to me he was the best and finest Prime Minster
I always has the sense of satisfaction that though as young boy at the age 9 i supported the congress just because they had put my movie star but when it really mattered and when i had put my first vote as a citizen of the nation I voted for man who given 50 years of service to this nation .
